Reducing the Appearance of Spider Veins with Laser and Radiofrequency Treatment

An important part of the body’s circulatory system, veins carry blood back to the heart. However, spider veins (branch-like vein formations that appear just beneath the skin’s surface in areas like the face and legs) are not vital to the circulatory system. Not only are these pesky veins unsightly, they do not function normally. Therefore, they can be treated without harming the body. Although there are numerous possible causes of spider veins, researchers are not able to pinpoint their direct cause. As a result, spider vein prevention methods are debatable; however, treatment methods are not.

Some commonly cited causes of spider veins are age, gender, pregnancy, lifestyle, rosacea, environmental effects, or even trauma to the vein. At AYA Medical Spa, we treat spider veins on the face and legs with our eMax™ system with elōs™ technology, which combines the use of laser with radiofrequency technology to destroy the unsightly vein without harming the surrounding tissue. Similar to the way hair removal lasers are attracted to the pigment within hair, our eMax™ with elōs™ system is drawn to the color within the vein. Once the technology breaks up the vein, it is absorbed by the immune system.

Although some patients report redness in the treatment area for a short time following the procedure, many patients do not have any side effects. Furthermore, spider vein reduction does not require downtime. Patients are often worried about comfort during the procedure, but our system uses low energy levels and even has a cooling applicator built in to maximize patient comfort. Although improvement can be seen in one treatment, some patients require up to three for complete results. Like other laser treatments, each session should be spaced six to eight weeks apart. During a consultation, our licensed estheticians are able to estimate how many treatments a patient will need.

Medical Spas Increase in Number Whether or Not They Are Safe

A recent article from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons suggested that there has been a rise in the number of medical spas in the United States, although many may not be safe or accredited. When you’re considering receiving a medical treatment—whether it’s cosmetic surgery or laser hair removal—it’s important to seek a licensed professional and do your research. Currently, spas are not required to be licensed, and although legislators are working on finding a solution to this issue, it is important to make sure you go to a reputable medical spa to optimize your results and reduce the risk of complications.

aya skin care First and foremost, if you are receiving cosmetic injectables like Botox® or facial fillers like Juvéderm®, make sure the spa has a licensed injectable purchaser (i.e., a board certified physician), as well as licensed cosmetic injectors to perform the treatment. It’s also important to ensure they are using brand name, FDA-approved products. Many boutiques are offering fake botox and similar counterfeit products with unknown ingredients. You should always ask to see the package if you aren’t positive you’re paying for the real thing.

Laser Skin Treatments Best for Winter

aya skin care This winter in Atlanta has been everything but typical with temperatures reaching as low as the 30s in the mornings and as high as the 60s in the afternoons. This warmer than normal weather may have you planning your spring break and summer vacations earlier, but if you’re hoping to receive laser treatment to take care of imperfections like spider veins, unwanted hair, or even wrinkles, now is the time to make your appointment.

Because the sun should be avoided after laser procedures, they are best reserved for colder months. UV exposure after laser treatment can cause hyperpigmentation, so we advise our laser patients to avoid sun exposure for 4 to 6 weeks following treatment. Although wearing SPF 30 sunscreen and clothes that cover the treated area(s) can help protect against hyperpigmentation, it is best to avoid the sun altogether, which is easier done during colder months than during the summer.

Here at AYA Medical Spa, we offer several laser treatments including laser hair removal, laser vein reduction, and laser wrinkle reduction. With multiple lasers that care for a variety of skin conditions, types, and complexions, we are sure to meet your laser treatment needs. If you are trying to receive laser treatment before the warm weather, it is important to plan accordingly as some treatments require multiple sessions spaced a few weeks apart to yield optimal results.

For instance, if you’re hoping to take care of spider veins before shorts season, plan for 1 to 3 treatments spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. During a consultation, we will be able to better tell you how many vein reduction treatments you will need. Likewise, depending on your lines and wrinkles, you can expect to need 3 to 5 wrinkle reducing laser treatments spaced 3 or 4 weeks apart. If you’re looking for a razor-free summer, you will probably require at least 4 to 6 laser hair removal treatments (some patients require up to 8) spaced 6 weeks apart for hair removal as close to permanent as you can get.
