BETTER HIRING LEADS TO PROSPERITY – FOUR BEST HIRING PRACTICES
BY MELISSA VAN ROSSUM
Recently a friend of mine confided that she had found the perfect facial at AYA, an Atlanta-based spa with locations in Buckhead (Phipps Plaza) and Sandy Springs, Georgia.
“They’re amazing,” she said, “everyone there is so good at what they do. They really know their craft.”
“That’s interesting,” I thought out loud. Usually when someone describes a service they talk about the effect of the service (i.e. the softness of their skin, the whiteness of their teeth, the style of their hair). After raving about how talented everyone was, she did go on to say how much they did for her complexion, but again she attributed it to how skilled and knowledgeable they were.
Convinced they were worth a try, I called and made the appointment. I started my visit with eyebrow sculpting, something I’d never tried before. I was ushered to a comfortable room where the esthetician went to work immediately, measuring and marking and measuring again. Turns out she has always worked within the beauty industry and even trained with Anastasia in L.A. (of Oprah brow-sculpting fame). “Brows are my passion,” she said. When she finally handed me the mirror I was impressed.
Next was microdermabrasion and after speaking with this esthetician, I was intrigued that she too was committed to a career in the beauty world. When I asked her how she decided to get into esthetics she answered, “It began with a personal decision to live a healthier life, inside and out.” Both professionals were deeply committed to being the best and it really showed in their enthusiasm, service and the results they gave.
Years ago I attended the Disney Institute when they hosted a world class conference for service marketers. At one point in the conference they had their Chief Marketing Office (who had some neat Disney-esque name like Chief Imagineer or something like that) present the secret to their service success. “You can’t train excellence,” they repeated again and again, “you have to hire it.”
Hiring is largely a misunderstood practice. As business owners and managers often aren’t educated as to how to hire well, they typically look at hiring as something that ought to be an innate skill like networking or writing. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard a client say that they’ll “just know it when they meet the right candidate.” But often they don’t.

A NEEW KIND OFF SPA – A LOOK INTO ATANTA’S MEDICAL SPAS
BY ANYA MARTIN
Founded in August 2003, Aya, named for the Japanese word for silk, is owned and operated by Atlanta Plastic Surgery, PC. It has two locations, one at Phipps Plaza and the other near Northside Hospital. Its medical director is James D. Namnoum, M.D., chief of plastic surgery at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and internationally known for his expertise in breast reconstruction, lifts and augmentation with minimal scarring. AYA exclusively uses the prescription-only Obagi skin care line, whose active ingredient is Retin-A.
The experience: To get the male perspective, my husband, Phil Nutman, agreed to try microdermabrasion. He has a completely different skin type from me – oily – and had been battling some break-outs on his cheeks for several weeks. Esthetician Heather Tereso turned down the lights, and to a soothing soundtrack, cleansed Phil’s face, gave him a hand massage, placed his hands in warm mitts and put herbal eye pads over his lids. He felt so relaxed that he fell asleep – something Heather says men are more likely to do.
Then Heather fired up the Megapeel machine and applied fine crystal grains to Phil’s skin with a handheld wand, exfoliating and removing the upper layer of dead skin. Phil says the sensation was “intense but pleasant, like a gentle citrus peeler.” His skin was slightly redder for about 12 hours after the procedure and required extra moisturizer for a few days, but overall it “looks and feels cleaner, clearer, and more vibrant.”

THE ALLURE OF AYA
The allure of AYA is beautiful skin…
The allure of AYA is the convenience & elegance of one of the world’s most beautiful malls – Phipps Plaza in the heart of Buckhead…
The allure of AYA is medical-grade treatments in a spa setting.
Owned and operated by the physicians of Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C., the licensed estheticians at AYA are able to treat skin ageing and damage at the cellular level using medical grade technology and pharmaceutical grade products of the same quality that you would receive in the medical offices of leading plastic surgeons. The difference is that you can enjoy these extraordinary aesthetic treatments in the comfort of a spa and the convenience of Phipps Plaza.
For Dr. James Namnoum, leading Atlanta plastic surgeon and AYA’s medical director, this is a vision that became a reality. “My colleagues and I mused the idea of a retail spa-like setting for a variety of today’s newest high tech non-invasive cosmetic skin treatments. When we found the location at Phipps, we knew the time was right. It all came together.”
AYA offers microdermabrasion, the Obagi Skin Health System, laser hair removal, Botox, and their newest addition: the Aurora I.P.L. device which combines pulsed light optical energy and radio-frequency electrical energy to perform a variety of tasks from permanent hair removal of all skin and hair types to photorejuvenation which removes both red and brown pigmentations (freckles, rosacea, broken capillaries, age spots), fine lines and wrinkles and textural irregularities from acne scarring.

HEADING TO THE MALL FOR HOLIDAY SHOPPING? NOW YOU CAN VISIT THE PLASTIC SURGEON BETWEEN ERRANDS.
BY MARY JO DILONARDO
At AYA, which means “silk” in Japanese, the lobby was chic and welcoming with suede couches, lemon walls and a sleek, flat-screen TV. Fresh flowers, stalks of bamboo and soothing music laced with the sounds of rushing waterfalls and gentle waves lulled me into a pleasant stupor.
… I was whisked to a changing room where I donned a waffle-weave gown and was then escorted to a white spa chair for microdermabrasion. Soothing music played on the speakers as another aesthetician, Martina McClurg, placed a warm herbal wrap around my neck and herbal eye pads on my lids. She also slathered my hands with shea butter and swaddled them in warm mitts.
… then the machine buzzed to life, shooting fine grains of crystals (smaller than salt or sand) onto my face through a narrow wand and sucking them back up, removing dead skin. Some people liken the sensation to the grazing of a cat’s tongue… Thirty minutes later, my face and hands felt silky smooth. Sounds hokey, but I was glowing…
AYA is the brainchild of the doctors of Atlanta Plastic Surgery, one of the city’s oldest plastic surgery practices. It’s half-spa, half-medical facility with all the charm of the former and not one outdated magazine or dying fern. Prices are similar to those at spas and a little less than you’d pay at a physician’s office but are not covered by insurance. In addition to various skin and hair removal treatments, you can buy the prescription-only Obagi line of skincare products.

You won’t find Vichy showers, plunge pools, massage tables, or steam rooms, at AYA. “All our treatments are results oriented,” says Jessica Chaney, manager of AYA, A Healthy Skin Experience.“There’s no fluff here.”
AYA, founded seven years ago by Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C., offers medical-caliber skin care treatments in a calm, soothing atmosphere. Services include FotoFacial RF, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, wrinkle reduction, vein treatments, facials and treatment for adult acne. Skin care consultations are complimentary and offered by a professional staff of licensed estheticians. The spa’s founder and executive director, Dr. James D. Namnoum, conceived AYA (the Japanese word for “silk”) as an added service for plastic surgery patients. According to Namuoum, baby boomers are healthier than preceding generations and have taken better care of themselves inside, so they want to look better outside too. Each new product and treatment at AYA is stringently tested for effectiveness. If the results are not ideal, the product or service is not offered. At AYA, there is no cookie-cuter approach to beautiful skin. Estheticians use skillful analysis to determine the precise, tailored approach appropriate for each patient. One of the latest diagnostic techniques, the Faragham Camera System, helps estheticians analyze the skin and make exacting recommendations for treatment, based on individual skin conditions. This system also allows AYA to track the patient’s progress as fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and uneven pigmentation fade away.
HAVING IT ALL – One of the spa’s most popular treatments is FotoFacial RF, a process that uses radio frequency and optical light to reduce wrinkles and pore size. FotoFacial RF is effective for rosacea, age spots, sun damage and wrinkles. All improve an average of 50 to 75 percent. “The program makes a dramatic difference,” says Chaney. These in-office treatments take about 30 minutes, as pulses of healing visible light and radiofrequency energy are passed into the skin. Patients see the desired results after only five or six treatments. FotoFirm RF combines FotoFacial RF with Polaris Wrinkle Reduction is recommended for patients who want all-in-one skin rejuvenation that targets broken capillaries, sun damage, uneven texture and wrinkles.
PRETTY PARTY – One evening a month, surgeons from Atlanta Plastic Surgery offer Botox Cosmetic and filler injections like Restylane at AYA’s Phipps Plaza location. “It’s like a Botox party,” says Chaney.“People can come after work and then go straight home. By morning, the redness has disappeared.” Dr. Namnoum is in full support of the swift increase in minimally-invasive procedures during the last several years.“We often advise patients to put off surgical procedures and begin with skin care,” he says.“At Atlanta Plastic Surgery, we’re not interested in doing surgeries that are unnecessary. If it’s not helpful, there’s no point in doing it,” states the doctor.
