From anti-aging treatments like cosmetic injectables and Ultherapy® to fat reduction treatments like CoolSculpting®, minimally invasive cosmetic treatments are becoming increasingly popular. However, just because they’re popular doesn’t mean people have a good understanding of what they do, so our licensed providers wanted to answer some common questions about CoolSculpting® fat reduction.
I’ve heard CoolSculpting® freezes fat, but how does that work?
Using a process called Cryolipolysis™, which uses extreme cold to freeze the fat within fat cells, CoolSculpting® damages the fat within cells and stimulates the body’s natural response. Over the next few weeks and months following treatment, the fat is eliminated through the body’s lymphatic system. Since the elimination process is gradual, so are the results. Most patients begin to notice results within 3 weeks, but full results will appear in 4 to 6 months.
If CoolSculpting® is really that cold, is there a risk of getting frostbite during treatment?
Although frostbite is associated with extremely cold temperatures, CoolSculpting® patients aren’t at risk of developing frostbite. Fat cells are altered by the temperature more easily than skin cells are altered, and researchers have determined the right temperature level and precise exposure time to reduce fat and avoid frostbite.
Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting® fat reduction?
CoolSculpting® is intended for patients who are healthy overall, but have small pockets of excess fat in areas such as the flanks, abdomen, and saddlebags that won’t respond to exercise or dieting. Some patients receive two CoolSculpting® treatments to achieve the results they’re after, while others are more suited for a liposuction procedure. During a consultation, our providers can help you determine if you’re a candidate.
Will I need multiple treatments in order to get the results I desire?
CoolSculpting® patients usually experience an average of 20-40% fat reduction with full results. Multiple treatments are not necessary for optimal results—it’s really a matter of patient preference. During your pre-treatment consultation, our estheticians will discuss these options to help give you a better idea of what to expect.
I had CoolSculpting® two weeks ago. When will I start to see a difference?
You should begin noticing results over the next couple of weeks. Most patients report a substantial difference about 2 months after treatment, but full results will appear in 4-6 months.
CoolSculpting® is FDA cleared for fat reduction of the flanks and abdomen, though patients commonly receive treatment in areas like the thighs, hips, back, and buttocks. Thanks to its non-invasive nature, patients are usually able to return to their daily activities right after treatment.
