4 Mistakes to Avoid when Moisturizing Your Face

August 13, 2018 | Blog

2 Non-Surgical Options to Get Rid of Your Double ChinMoisturizing daily is a critical part of maintaining a healthy, gorgeous complexion. However, there is more to moisturizing than simply purchasing the first cream you can find and applying it to your skin. If you’re not using the right moisturizer or if you’re applying it incorrectly, the time and money you spend could all be for nothing. On the other hand, moisturizing correctly can increase your skin’s hydration and prevents a flaky or dull-looking complexion. So, to help our patients get the most out of their facial moisturizing efforts, here are a few common mistakes to avoid.

Moisturizing at the Wrong Time

To get the best results from your moisturizer, it’s important to not apply it to dry skin. Moisturizing after showering or washing your face can help lock the moisture and hydrating agents into your skin. But, your timing is critical. If your skin is too wet when you moisturize, the lotion can slide off of your skin. We recommend applying your moisturizer immediately after your post-shower towel drying when the skin is still slightly damp.

Choosing the Wrong Moisturizer for Your Skin

When we are asked, “what is the best moisturizer available,” the answer is always, “whichever one is the best fit for your skin’s unique needs.” Everyone’s skin is different, so a certain product that has worked wonders for a friend may not work well for you. The key is to know what ingredients can best address your specific skincare concerns and to find a moisturizer that features these ingredients. In some cases, it’s a matter of trying several different moisturizers and seeing how your skin reacts to them.

Forgetting About Your Neck

It’s common for people to stop at the jawline when applying their facial moisturizer. However, the skin on your neck is as in need of moisture and hydration as your facial skin. Using the same moisturizer on your neck will help slow down additional signs of aging that you may not have considered.

Not Applying Your Moisturizer Correctly

As we age, gravity can pull our skin downward, leading to sagging and wrinkles. To help combat this, we recommend using gentle, upward strokes when applying your moisturizer. The upward strokes may prevent additional pulling of the facial skin and a gentle massaging technique can help increase circulation and enhance your skin’s ability to absorb your moisturizer.
