AYA’s September Specials Explained: Answers to Your Questions about Chemical Peels

Answers to Your Questions about Chemical PeelsYou may have seen in our newsletter, Facebook, or Twitter that AYA Medical Spa is currently offering great deals on a few of our most popular chemical peels, so we thought we’d take the time to explain the benefits of this skin treatment and answer some of your frequently asked questions.

Why is it called a “chemical peel?”

Chemical peels got their name because they use chemical solutions (like alphahydroxy acid and phenol acid) to remove or “peel away” damaged, outer layers of skin to reveal the rejuvenated, healthy skin underneath. Depending on the chemical peel’s strength, a patient may experience actual skin peeling following their treatment.

What is the process of getting a chemical peel like?

Before administering the peel, one of our licensed estheticians  will cleanse the skin to remove all cosmetics, oily residue, or dirt. The chemical compound is then applied to the skin. At this point, some patients may feel a slight burning or tingling sensation depending on the strength of the solution, but this decreases when the compounds are neutralized. Our estheticians utilize a cooling device tominimize any pain. Once neutralized, the skin is gently cleansed to insure that there is no solution residue. The treated skin is then covered with sunscreen to protect its rejuvenated appearance from sun damage.

Is there any downtime associated with chemical peels?

Unlike more invasive rejuvenation procedures, chemical peels generally produce the desired results with very little recovery time. Immediately after the treatment, some patients may look and feel flushed as if they had a sunburn. However, within two to three days dead and damaged skin will be shed to reveal the full results—a more youthful complexion—within seven to ten days.

What sort of results should I expect?

After the shedding of the dead and damaged skin, most patients reporta dewy, rejuvenated appearance with full results after the four to six week skin cell sloughing/growing cycle. Skin will appear smoother in texture and tone as well as firmer and clearer. Expect to also see fewer fine lines, age spots, and blemishes.

Our estheticians can help you determine which chemical peel will best suit your skin type and skin care needs during a skin analysis. For example, the Melanage skin lightening peel can help reduce hyperpigmentation, or age spots, and works to reduce fine lines by naturally stimulating collagen production. While the Revitalize peel can help with sun damage, wrinkles, and acne. Whether you would like relief from acne breakouts, the appearance of fine lines, or wish to rejuvenate a dull complexion, each of AYA Medical Spa’s three locations has a chemical peel to help you achieve your desired look.
