Our skin is arguably our body’s most prominent feature. Dry, cracking skin can often be one of the most obvious visible signs of aging. That’s why it is so essential to take care of your skin, especially during the summertime when temperatures rise and increased UV levels can take their toll. While we may love the feel of basking in the sun’s rays, sun exposure can have a negative impact on our skin over time if we’re not careful.
With that in mind, the skincare experts at AYA™ Medical Spa are here to provide some recommendations on how to keep your skin healthy and hydrated through the long, hot summer:
Dear #AYA,
What should I look for when purchasing a summer sunscreen?
Sincerely,
Playing it Safe
Dear Playing it Safe,
It’s certainly true that SPF protection is important when choosing which sunscreen to use this summer, but there are other factors to consider as well. Since UV rays are more intense in warmer conditions, find a sunscreen with at least SPF 50 that can provide stronger protection. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure your sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection. Consistency is important too. Try to avoid a heavier lotion that you may use in the fall or winter, as these can lead to breakouts. To cover all your bases, we offer plenty of great broad-spectrum sunscreens including EltaMD® UV Sport 50.
Dear #AYA,
Besides using skincare products and treatments, what simple things can I do at home to keep my skin healthy this summer?
Sincerely,
Seeking Solutions
Dear Seeking Solutions,
There are a number of everyday things you can do in the comfort of your own home to help promote healthy, hydrated skin during the summer. For starters, keeping your body hydrated will keep your skin hydrated, so make sure to drink lots of water all throughout the day. If you drink coffee or caffeine in other forms, you may want to balance this out with even more water than normal. Additionally, taking a cool shower after you have been sweating can help your skin’s health and prevent potential breakouts. A hot shower after sun exposure can actually further dry your skin.
Dear #AYA,
Will certain skincare treatments and products perform differently depending on my skin type?
Sincerely,
Feeling Sensitive
Dear Feeling Sensitive,
Absolutely. While many of our skincare treatments like laser hair removal are safe and effective for all skin types, the key to getting the most out of your summer skin care routine is understanding your specific skin type. Whether your skin is dry, oily, sensitive, or pigmented, we strongly recommend coming into AYA™ for a complimentary skincare analysis to know for sure which products and treatments will have the most positive impact on your skin.
We hope this was informative. Maintaining great skin is a year-round pursuit, but keeping your skin fresh and vital during the summer heat is a great way to stay ahead of the game. If you have any questions of your own about our summertime skincare tips or if you would like to schedule a complimentary skincare analysis today, please contact AYA™ Medical Spa or come in to any of our three Alpharetta or Atlanta area locations (Avalon, Phipps Plaza, Northside).
