Dear #AYA: Winter Skincare Tips

December 13, 2016 | Blog

winter-skincare-tipsThe winter season can be a challenging time for your skin. As the crisp autumn air makes way for harsher, snowy conditions, it’s normal for your skin to react negatively to these seasonal changes. For many, the cold winter can bring unwelcome dryness to the skin on your face and hands. It’s not uncommon for the skin to become so dry that it results in flaking, cracking or unpleasant skin conditions like eczema and even acne. The combination of cold temperatures outside and heated homes, stores, and offices can do a number on your skin.

That’s why our final Dear #AYA entry of the year offers some great advice and recommendations for winter skincare products and treatments that can help protect your moisture-starved skin through the colder months. So without further ado, here are a few pointers to help develop your winter skin care routine for dry skin:

Dear #AYA,
I have noticed that the dryness on my upper arms has led to the skin flaring up and becoming rough. Can you recommend a cleanser or lotion that could potentially help?

Sincerely,
In the Rough

Dear In the Rough,
We recommend trying out a cleanser with salicylic acid like Clenziderm® Foaming Cleanser from Obagi® Medical. The salicylic acid helps exfoliate dead cells around the hair follicles and reduce the appearance of bumps.

Dear #AYA,
There’s nothing better than stepping out of the cold weather and into a hot bath. But does this have any effect, positive or negative, on the quality of my skin?

Sincerely,
Steaming Up

Dear Steaming Up,
A long, hot bath or shower feels great when temperatures outside drop, but staying in too long can strip your skin of much-needed moisture. For the smoothest, most hydrated skin, we recommend restricting warmer showers and baths to no longer than 10 minutes and limiting yourself to once per day if possible, plus skincare products and in-office treatments at AYA.

Dear #AYA,
Is exfoliating as important for my skin as moisturizing? Which of these steps do you consider to be the most vital for healthy skin?

Sincerely,
Establishing Priorities

Dear Establishing Priorities,
Instead of thinking about which of these steps is the most essential, it’s better to understand how they work in tandem and complement each other. An exfoliant like Revision® Skincare Exfoliating Facial Rinse wipes away layers of dead skin and helps your moisturizer penetrate deeper and work more effectively.

Hopefully this was helpful to many of you experiencing changes to your skin this winter.
