One question we hear commonly from patients is whether or not skincare products expire. The short answer is yes. Over time the ingredients used in skincare products can begin to lose their potency. In addition to diminishing the quality of their performance, using expired skincare products can even have a potentially negative impact on your skin. Some products like sunscreens are required by the FDA to post expiration dates on their packaging. Others are not. We recommend looking out for the following signs that your product may be expired:

• A noticeably bad or irregular smell
• The texture has changed, or the product has begun to separate
• A noticeable change in color
• Any sign of black, green, or blue mold spots
• Throw away any product that claims to be for single-use only after your initial use, even if there are leftovers.

 

There are also things you can do to potentially extend the shelf life of your favorite skincare products. Some products that remain unopened and sealed may retain their potency for at least three to five years (however, this varies from product to product). Heat and humidity can negatively impact skincare products. Water that gets into a product container can lead to mold. That’s why we recommend storing skincare products in a cool, dry environment (and not in a bathroom). Additionally, wash your hands before applying any product to your face or body can prevent bacteria from being introduced to the container or your skin.
