Spring skincare tips from AYA medical spaOur skin changes as we age—it’s much different in our 20s than in our 40s. The tips below are designed to help those in their 20s and 30s determine the best skin care regimen based on how our skin changes as we age.

In Your 20s

What’s going on with your skin?

During your 20s, skincare should be all about protection and prevention—the keys to keeping your skin looking great for years to come. Though you may no longer be a teenager, hormones can still have an effect on your skin causing embarrassing acne breakouts and blackheads.

What should you do?

Always wear sunscreen, whether it’s sunny outside or not. UVA and UVB rays can damage skin even if it’s cloudy outside, and while you may think a tan makes you look young and healthy, there’s no such thing as a “healthy glow” from the sun. Not only can sun exposure cause sun damage like hyperpigmentation and wrinkles, it can also lead to life-threatening skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “The number of women under age 40 diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma has more than doubled in the last 30 years; the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma among women under age 40 has increased almost 700 percent.” Skin cancer is quickly becoming the “young person’s cancer.”

For acne, laser and light treatments can help reduce the bacteria that mix with dead skin and oil to clog pores causing unsightly blemishes. These types of treatments can also target the glands that overproduce oil to help even-out irritated and greasy-looking complexions. Skincare products that boost the skin’s natural exfoliation process can also help to control acne for those in their 20s. AYA’s acne chemical peel and customized acne facial can also help increase cell turnover and soothe irritated skin to treat the signs of acne.

In Your 30s

What’s going on with your skin?

During your 30s the amount of time it takes skin cells to renew begins to take longer and oil production begins to decrease. Many patients begin noticing the first signs of aging around this time, like lines around the eyes, between the eyebrows, and near the mouth, though those who prevented sun exposure will not notice signs of aging as early as those who didn’t.

What should you do?

Just as you should do in your 20s, you should always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen. Take action to prevent further signs of aging by using age-appropriate skincare products. Products with moisturizing antioxidants and agents that fight free radicals are also beneficial to help fight further skin damage or signs of aging.

Less intense cosmetic treatments like anti-aging facials can help to reduce minor signs of aging and revitalize dull-looking skin by encouraging the skin to produce more of its own moisture. Chemical peels benefit all types of skin, but can help reduce signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles by allowing the skin to slough dead layers while increasing collagen production and skin elasticity. Other peels can improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, age spots, and sun damage.

All of AYA Medical Spa’s treatments are performed by expertly trained and licensed providers who first perform skincare analysis consultations to help determine which treatments will best suit your skin’s needs regardless of age.
