Cosmetic Injectables Soar in Popularity According to ASPS Statistics

Facial Rejuvenation with Botox and Facial FillersFor the third year in a row, Botox® Cosmetic and facial fillers have topped the annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics for minimally invasive procedures. In 2012, the biggest increases were with facial rejuvenation procedures, specifically injectables which were up by 8 percent. Patients pursue these treatments to address wrinkles, fine lines, and areas of lost volume. For patients who’ve undergone a surgical procedure, Botox® and facial fillers can help maintain results for a smooth, youthful appearance. Unlike surgery, non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures can be performed with minimal downtime. At AYA Medical Spa, our licensed nurse injector administers the five different injectables we offer.

The top non-surgical procedure according to ASPS was Botox® with over 3 million treatments performed in 2012. Botox® Cosmetic is a dermal injectable made of a purified form of botulinum that relaxes the facial muscles to reduce wrinkles and furrows. It is injected in small amounts to the upper facial area on the forehead and around the eyes. Results typically last 6 months to a year, so additional treatments are necessary to maintain results since the body eventually absorbs the botulinum substance.

At AYA, we offer Juvéderm XC®, Sculptra® Aesthetic, and Radiesse® facial filler options. Unlike Botox® which relaxes facial forehead muscles, facial fillers replump areas of lost volume to minimize wrinkling and fine lines in the nasolabial folds, perioral area (around the mouth), cheeks and lips. Juvéderm XC® and Radiesse® are comprised of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that acts as a cushion to support tissue that may have lost volume. Our other facial filler Sculptra® Aesthetic contains polylactic (fruit) acid to stimulate collagen production that will naturally add volume to skin.

Although these facial rejuvenation treatments offer results that last up to a year, it is necessary to continue treatments to retain results. Cosmetic injectables are great non-surgical alternatives for patients who are not yet ready for facial plastic surgery.
