Trend Watch: Preventative Injectables for Millennials

July 20, 2017 | Blog

Trend Watch Preventative Injectables for MillennialsThe popularity of non-surgical injectables treatments has exploded over the last decade. Patients love having the ability to treat wrinkles, facial lines, and other visible signs of aging without the investment and time commitment required for invasive surgical procedures. Although these anti-aging treatments are commonly associated with older patients trying to restore a more youthful look, we have noticed a surge in recent years of younger patients using injectables to try to fight off the effects of aging before they even take hold.

We call these preventative injectables treatments. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s (ASAPS) annual report, more than one million cosmetic injectables treatments were performed on patients between the ages of 19-34 last year. While anti-aging care for the young may seem counterintuitive, preventative injectables can have astonishing results for those interested in preventing wrinkles or lost facial volume before they become an issue.

Botox® Cosmetic injections are commonly used to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles caused by specific facial muscle movements. These refer to horizontal lines across the forehead, crow’s feet, and lines that appear in-between the eyes. Preventative Botox® injections can be used to improve the facial posture and prevent dynamic wrinkles before they form. By applying Botox® before wrinkles begin to appear, we are able to train the facial muscles which can lead to more graceful, wrinkle-free aging.

Just as receiving Botox® injections can be used as a wrinkle-prevention measure for younger patients, preventative facial filler injections can help reduce the amount of facial volume lost over time. The loss of facial volume occurs as a result of diminished collagen production due to natural aging, sun damage, or weight fluctuation. A recent study performed by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) discovered that hyaluronic acid-based facial fillers like Juvéderm®, Restylane® & Sculptra® Aesthetic can actually promote healthy, natural collagen production to help keep the facial skin strong and plump before facial volume begins to recede.

Here at AYA Medical Spa, we stress the importance of seeing an expert for any and all cosmetic injectables treatments. This is especially important when it comes to preventable injectables. Some novice injectors may think it’s right to use the same amount of an injectable treatment on a younger patient as they would on an older one. But preventative injectables treatments require a steady hand and expert knowledge to provide the best, most natural-looking results.
