Skin Care Technology: Hot vs. Cold

AYA Medical Spa offers an assortment of cosmetic services and skin care products to meet a variety of patient needs. From acne treatments and laser hair removal to anti-aging treatments, AYA provides something for everyone. In a recent blog, we highlighted our various anti-aging technologies and explained how each technology works. Now, we’d like to discuss technology that uses temperature to aid treatment. Using hot or cold temperatures during skin treatments typically induces a response in the body (i.e., stimulating collagen production, encouraging natural healing processes, or eliminating fat).

Heat it up – Many of our skin care technologies use the assistance of heat to treat skin conditions. Depending on the source of the heat (i.e., radiofrequency (RF), ultrasound, etc.), skin conditions such as lax skin, wrinkles, and uneven complexion can be targeted. Patients looking for a treatment to reduce surface imperfections like scars, melasma, and wrinkles can often benefit from Sciton® laser skin resurfacing or wrinkle reduction treatment with eMax with elōs technology. Likewise, our FotoFacial RF® and FotoBody RF® technologies combine heat with light therapy to treat sun spots, spider veins, wrinkles, and more.

We offer skin tightening services specifically for wrinkles and lax skin. Using radiofrequency energy, our ReFirme skin tightening technology heats deep layers of skin to encourage the body’s collagen production and tighten loose skin. Although Ultherapy® skin tightening is similar to ReFirme in that it uses heat to tighten weak tissue and stimulate collagen, this technology actually uses ultrasound. Since collagen production is gradual, results for both of these skin tightening treatments appear over time, usually a month or two after treatment.

Cool it down – Although we offer several treatments that use heat to target skin conditions, we do offer CoolSculpting® fat reduction. CoolSculpting® is an FDA cleared non-surgical option to help treat unwanted fat that actually uses extremely cold temperatures to freeze the fat away. The cold damages the fat within cells and eliminates them through the body’s natural processes over time. Patients usually report a 20-40% fat reduction within 4-6 months of their initial treatment, though they often begin to notice a difference in about 2 months.

It is important to understand this technology is designed for very specific patients who have small amounts of fat to be treated. CoolSculpting® is the perfect option for healthy patients who haven’t improved with dieting and exercise, isolated, stubborn fat on the lower abdomen or flanks. Patients with larger fat deposits may be more suitable candidates for liposuction surgery.
